Dear Researchers, Scholars, and Students of All Ages,
I started this page to help you navigate various aspects of academic research, specifically survey instruments and data analysis of those surveys. Right now, drschumann.org is focused on the Academic Motivation Scale by Vallerand, et. al. (1992).
I used this survey instrument in my doctoral research. At the time, there was very little information on the web that provided guidance on scoring AMS survey results. I used Qualtrics XM to distribute the survey to college students. Qualtrics XM provided me with an Excel file with the survey results data. I had to figure out a way to translate Vallerand’s algorithm formula of: (2((know+acc+stim/3))+iden-((intro+reg/2)+2amo) into a meaningful Excel formula so that I could analyze the data and then upload it into SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) for statistical analysis.
Due to the lack of guidance on this scale, I needed to create a statistically sound process. I’ve done that and I hope that what I have to share with you will be helpful. The AMS C-28 survey instrument is very popular and has been used worldwide for many years and to analyze many different types of research questions. The way I used and analyzed this scale for my research is not the only way, there are many applications for sound research. I will be creating more reference sheets and video tutorials to help you use the AMS C-28. Future research topics will include other types of research instruments and ways to analyze data.
